| oapen.abstract.otherlanguage | The paper reviews the bishops of the most important Tuscan towns from the time of pope Paschal II until about 1180. After 1113-1115 the bishops of northern Tuscany took a lot of castles and seigneurial rights previously belonged to Count Ugo III, last remnant of the Cadolingi family. In the same years Count Geoffrey, son of Albert II of the Alberti, became bishop of Florence and made the interests of the bishopric coincide with those of his family. Pope Innocent II (1130-1143) appointed a good number of Tuscan bishops. We can recall both Pisan archbishops Hubert (1133-1137) and Baldwin (1138-1145) and Atto, bishop of Pistoia between 1133 and 1153. In 1144 he introduced in Pistoia the cult of Saint James (still very celebrated in the city). After the papal schism of 1159 four Tuscan bishoprics joined the popes supported by Frederick I in opposition to Alexander III. Normality returned only shortly before 1180. | |
