Chapter Mishima in viaggio (1951-1952)
Abstract
This contribution examines Mishima’s first trip abroad, undertaken as a correspondent for the Asahi shinbun between 1951 and 1952. The account of this experience is contained in Aporo no sakazuki, a sort of diary in which Mishima records his experiences at various stages of the journey, from Hawaii to Greece to Rome, through the United States, South America, England, and France. It is a more diligent than passionate account, in which emotions emerge not so much from contact with people or nature, but from encountering art. While Mishima narrates his experiences in America and various European countries with a certain detachment, his senses come alive in Greece. The opportunity to closely contemplate the beauty of artworks previously known only indirectly intensifies his admiration. This experience, pushing Mishima towards a greater awareness of the physical dimension, will have significant repercussions on his career and life.
