This volume investigates the cultural, linguistic, and historical roots of Atticism: the purist movement that in the Imperial age promoted 5th-century Attic as a literary linguistic standard. The status-building of Attic began in classical Athens and was later formalised by Hellenistic scholarship, which constructed Attic as a cultural monument and prepared the blossoming of Atticism in the 1st–2nd centuries CE.
