Sylvester of Antioch
Life and Achievements of an 18th-Century Christian Orthodox Patriarch
Abstract
This is the first English monograph on Patriarch Sylvester of the Church of Antioch (1724–1766), based on extensive Greek, Arabic and Romanian sources, many unknown before. Sylvester faced various challenges stemming from the ever changing balance of power between the Latin Church, the Patriarchate of Constantinople, Western interests in the Levant and the Ottoman rule. His Arabic book printing and icon painting activities are the main focus.
