Abstract
Armoured soldiers, sexualized machine men, mechanized athletes: Between 1914 and 1926, artists of the German and French avant-garde used the mechanical body as a motif to illustrate the crises of their time and to question man’s place in society. This volume analyses how the motif was staged – as a masculine utopia offering a saviour, a New Man – applying examples from key modernist works.
